General Description
We have subdivided the description of Victoria's Geology into two parts. The history to the Carboniferous is presented by inaugural Selwyn Medallist Fons VandenBerg, while the post-Carboniferous discussion is by his GeoScience Victoria colleague Vince Morand, who also supplied numerous images for the discussion.

If you are unsure of the meaning of the terms used by geologists when talking of geological time, click here for an overview of the geological timescale, or look here for definitions and sources of many of the terms used.

Heritage Values
Our archives include an early inventory (1980) of the Geological Features of the National Estate in Victoria, which you can download. (PDF, 222 pages, 28 Mb)

Playing Favourites
From time to time, geologists tell us of their favorite geological sites. Click on the menu item on the left to see the latest, and to access earlier examples.

We have also made available early excursion guides to Victorian Geology. These should be viewed as a cultural archives rather than authoritative guides, as advances in both our geological ideas and in the extent and variety of observations used to test them have wrought extensive changes in our understanding of the geology of Victoria. Click on the menu item in the left menu bar.
