Are You Interested in a Career in the Geosciences?
The Geological Society of Australia (Victoria Division) is constantly receiving queries from senior students of secondary colleges about opportunities and careers in the geosciences. Whilst geoscience topics are taught in other programs up to VCE level, like science, environmental science, geography, biology and chemistry, geology as a scientific discipline is not taught at VCE and students are therefore not aware of careers which the GEOSCIENCES may offer them.

What are the Geosciences or Earth Sciences?
The core discipline of the geosciences is GEOLOGY, the study of the evolution and composition of the third planet in our solar system, the planet EARTH. Modern developments in rocketry and space satellites has expanded interest and studies to the other planets and the universe. The fields of space and extra terrestrial geology have been opened up. However, most graduates in geology will take careers working within their own country and offshore areas, for scientific and economic reasons. This will involve:
  • exploration for mineral and fuel deposits
  • exploration for construction materials and groundwater
  • the study of landforms to aid planning and development
  • and the protection of the environment against waste disposal pollution
There are a wide range of disciplines within the EARTH SCIENCES. To find out more about these different disciplines, click on the disciplines button on the menu bar.
