Page Title
From this page the Division provides links to work by our own members, and others, on the history of geology and other Earth Sciences. This endeavour is different from, but related to, the work that the Society does on our Geological Heritage.
Some history, of course, is recorded in our own archives, and reviewing the information in our own publications, awards, and symposia, is rewarding. An overview of the early days of the GSA can be found in the book "Rock Me Hard", edited by BJ and DF Branagan (1994) - which might be located but is out of print (copies are available from Amazon, of course).
One of the interesting early artefacts is the attendance sheet from the first meeting of the Victoria Division, on 26 March 1953. Look here, and see how many names you recognise!
Some information about distinguished early researchers can also be found on the Bright Sparcs website.
The GSA's Earth Science History Group is a Specialist Group within the GSA. The current organising committee is in Western Australia. The Committee had been in Victoria since late in 2002. Details of some of the ESHG's activities, including its Conference in late 2007, can be found at this website, and an example of its work is here.
