The central aims of geological heritage work in Victoria can be summarised as follows
  • identification of sites and features in Victoria
  • documentation of such sites and features
  • evaluation of sites and features in terms of significance
  • assisting in the management of sites, by monitoring and promoting their protection for geological reference and research, and for education.

The Victorian Subcommittee for Geological Heritage is a part of the local Division of the Geological Society of Australia Inc, and for over 30 years has been the main group involved in locating, assessing and interpreting the significant geological sites of Victoria.

The subcommittee currently operates a Database of Statewide Sites. The group is currently working on the documentation and assessment of sites of significance using 1:250 000 geological mapsheets as a basis for report areas. This work is undertaken in close consultation with GSV (which documents such sites as part of its geological mapping program) and other relevant authorities. Susan White currently operates the database and all inquiries for information should be directed to her. However, this is not public information and a small charge is levied for providing information from the database to cover costs.

The Subcommittee works with the Australian Heritage Commission in finding and describing new sites, and nominating these to the Register of the National Estate. The Subcommittee members carry out this work on an honorary basis, with the assistance, from time –to –time, of consultants funded by Australian Heritage Commission grants.

Work has included a detailed submission to the Land Conservation Council's study of the Victorian coast, and the overseeing of a lengthy report entitled Eruption points of the Newer Volcanic Province of Victoria—an inventory and evaluation of scientific significance, prepared under an Australian Heritage Commission grant jointly to the GSA and the National Trust (Victoria). In 1995–1996 a grant from the AHC was used to document geological sites in the northeast of the state. A detailed assessment of sites was undertaken in 2002 for Melbourne Water.

The Subcommittee also provides submissions to planning and environmental assessment inquiries and hearings, and responds to inquiries and comments from government, environmental groups, and the general public.
